Bird of Prey Viewpoint

The vantage point here gives you a proper chance to spot birds of prey circling above the Devon landscape. It's the kind of spot where locals know to look up - buzzards, red kites, occasionally something rarer if you're lucky. Exeter's only a short drive away, so it doesn't require much planning to fit into a broader ramble around the county.

You'll want binoculars. That's the main thing. Stand for twenty minutes and you'll likely see something; stay an hour and you might catch a hunting dive or two. It's free to visit and takes as long as you fancy - could be a quick ten-minute detour or a proper sit-down with a flask and a field guide. Spring and early summer tend to be best, when the birds are most active.

Families with older kids who can manage standing still for more than ninety seconds will get something from it. Young children might find it a bit dull - there's no building, no hands-on element, just watching sky. Birdwatchers obviously, though, will think you've found them gold.
