About Birchwalk Wood
This is a walker's wood rather than a destination attraction. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards telling you which tree is which. You just turn up, find a gap in the greenery, and head in. It works perfectly if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Wakestone & Wild is only a mile and a half away - and need somewhere to burn off energy without driving far. Families with kids who'll actually walk rather than moan will get the most out of it; small children might find the lack of paths a bit boggy and frustrating.
Allow a couple of hours if you want to properly explore the network without rushing. Early morning is when you'll see the most wildlife, and honestly, late spring through early autumn is when the light really comes through those high branches. Winter can feel a bit oppressive in here - all dripping mud and no views.
It's free, obviously, because it's just woodland. Pulborough is your nearest proper town for supplies or a decent pub afterwards. The wood fits neatly into a wider South Downs walking trip - you could easily string this together with better-known spots in the area without it feeling like a detour.
