Birchfold Copse

The woodland paths through Birchfold Copse are proper peaceful - the kind of place where you actually hear birds rather than your own thoughts on repeat. It's a small forest near Cranleigh that locals know well but tourists often miss, which is exactly why it works. The trails wind through mature trees and patches of scrubland, nothing dramatic but thoroughly pleasant for a couple of hours if you've got walkers in the family who want something low-key. Kids can burn off energy without you worrying they'll get properly lost, and the undergrowth is interesting enough to keep them spotting things. Depending on the season you might see bluebells or fungi - nothing showy, just the sort of woodland interest that makes a walk feel worthwhile rather than obligatory. There's no visitor centre or facilities we could find, so it's very much a turn-up-and-go affair. Best done in decent weather since the paths can get muddy. Allow an hour to ninety minutes if you're meandering. If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots - Glamping Holiday and Care Ashore Campsite are both close by - this makes a cracking free addition to a country break without needing a car journey. It's the sort of place that rounds out a Surrey holiday nicely rather than being the main event. Good for combining with a proper park visit in the area, or simply as somewhere to decompress between other attractions.
