Durfold Wood

Durfold Wood sprawls across the Surrey countryside near Cranleigh - a proper stretch of mixed woodland that rewards a good ramble without requiring a full day's commitment. Paths wind through beech and oak, the canopy thick enough to feel genuinely remote despite being minutes from the town. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites and need an afternoon escape rather than a headline attraction.

Walkers will get the most from it. The terrain's gentle enough for families with older kids, though muddy stretches after rain can be annoying if you've only got trainers. There's no visitor centre, cafe, or facilities to speak of - just woodland doing what woodland does. Allow an hour or so for a decent circuit; any longer and you're stretching it unless you're really keen on moss identification.

Frankly, it's not a destination in itself. But if you're camped at Glamping Holiday or Care Ashore Campsite on the Springbok Estate - both within three miles - it fills a gap perfectly on a day when the weather's decent. The air smells right after rain, and you'll likely see muntjac deer if you're quiet. It's free and unencumbered, which is exactly what a local wood should be. Don't expect dramatic views or historical plaques; just come for the walk.
