Birchetts Wood

A proper woodland walk through ancient trees and winding paths - that's what Birchetts Wood delivers. Located just outside Maidstone, this forest offers the kind of shelter you'll appreciate when the Kent drizzle rolls in, with a decent canopy that keeps things relatively dry underfoot.

The wood itself is straightforward: established paths thread through mixed woodland, nothing dramatically challenging but genuinely pleasant. You'll find yourself walking amongst mature trees with enough space to actually breathe, which sounds obvious until you've battled through some of Kent's more cramped nature reserves. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think.

Walkers will get the most from Birchetts Wood - this isn't a spectacle spot with a ten-minute highlight reel. You're after a solid hour or two of forest tramping, with no particular destination other than the walk itself. Families with young children might find it a bit samey after half an hour, though the shaded paths are good for escaping summer heat.

If you're camping at Still Acres or the rather swanky Glamping @ Rankins Farm - both within five miles - this makes a sensible morning option before heading somewhere with more obvious appeal. It's not worth a dedicated trip from far away, but as part of a Kent park holiday, it fills a gap nicely when the weather turns or you want something low-key between bigger attractions.
