Binian Lough

A proper mountain tarn tucked away in the Mourne Mountains, Binian Lough sits at around 400 metres above sea level beneath the shadow of Slieve Binian. Getting there requires a decent hike - this isn't a drive-up-and-look sort of lake. The walk from the nearest car park takes about an hour each way, following rough mountain paths that can get boggy after rain.

Once you reach it, the lough is surprisingly small but perfectly formed. Dark peaty water reflects the surrounding peaks on calm days, though the weather up here changes fast. It's the sort of place that rewards serious walkers rather than casual visitors - families with young children might find the trek a bit much.

The real appeal lies in the sense of remoteness. You're properly in the mountains here, with views across the Mournes that justify the effort. Wild swimmers sometimes brave the cold water, though it's definitely not for the faint-hearted.
