Billinge Hill

The walk up Billinge Hill is shorter than you'd expect but feels proper rewarding once you're up there. It's a modest peak just outside Skelmersdale, nothing like the Lake District dramatics, but the views across Lancashire flatten out nicely from the top. On a clear day you can see right across to the Pennines, which makes the modest climb worthwhile.

It's the sort of place locals know and outsiders miss. A lot of people do it as part of a longer walk rather than a destination in itself, and honestly that makes sense. The summit's got a trig point and an old stone beacon structure - nothing fancy, but it's the real deal. The terrain's moorland, so it's never particularly muddy even after rain, and the paths are clear enough that you won't get lost.

Walkers and fell-runners get the most out of this. Kids will manage it fine if they're the sort who actually like walking rather than being dragged along. Allow about an hour and a half return trip from the car park, though you can make it quicker if you're moving properly. There's no admission charge and no visitor facilities, so bring water and a decent map.
