Bigland Barrow

The walk up Bigland Barrow is short, steep, and entirely worth the leg work. You're looking at maybe twenty minutes from the road to the top - proper quick for what you get in return. The fell itself sits just off the A590 near Newby Bridge, making it dead handy if you're camped at one of the nearby parks like Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park or Old Park Wood.

What strikes you first is how much ground you cover from such a modest height. The views sweep across Windermere and down towards the southern lakes, with the higher peaks rising up beyond. On a clear day, you can see for miles. The path climbs through bracken and fell grass, and it's genuinely steep in places - worn steps show where thousands of feet have gone before.

This suits fell walkers who want something quick and satisfying without committing to a full day in the hills. Families with older kids will manage fine, though younger ones might find the gradient taxing. It's the sort of walk that fits neatly into a caravan holiday - leave after breakfast, back by lunch. The terrain is rough underfoot in places, so decent boots matter more than you'd think for such a small fell.

Timing-wise, add in parking and a slow descent, and you're looking at a solid hour. Go early on summer weekends if you want the fell to yourself. Winter climbs are moorish too, though the wind picks up quickly at the top. Free to walk, obviously. No facilities on the fell itself.
