Cop o' Cow Hill

The walk up Cop o' Cow Hill near the A590 corridor isn't long, but it punches above its weight for views. You're looking out across the Leven Valley towards Windermere, and on a clear day the sight of the lake sprawling out below is genuinely worth stopping for. The summit itself is modest - nothing dramatic, just a proper fell top with decent all-round visibility.

History buffs will find the name intriguing enough to make the detour. The fell has one of those wonderfully obscure Lake District place names that sparks curiosity, though there's not much interpretation on the ground to explain what you're actually standing on.

Families with walkers aged eight and up will manage it fine. Allow thirty to forty minutes for the round trip depending on fitness, though you could easily stretch it to an hour if you're having a proper look around and sitting down for a break. It's not a hike that demands half your day.

If you're based at Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park or Hill of Oaks - both within easy striking distance - this makes a solid morning walk before heading elsewhere. Park Cliffe over towards Windermere is three miles away, so it's worth coupling with a lake-side explore. The fell works best on one of those crisp, clear days when you can actually see something; a grey, murky afternoon doesn't do it any favours. Not life-changing, but if you're in the area with some spare time and legs that need stretching, it'll do the job.
