Bidean nam Bian

The highest peak in the Argyll and Bute region, Bidean nam Bian rises to 1,150 metres and dominates the landscape around Ballachulish like nothing else in sight. Getting up there is proper work - the main route heads through Coe Valley, climbing steeply for most of the three-and-a-half-hour ascent. Bring decent boots and a map; weather can turn quickly, and visibility goes south faster than you'd expect.

Once you're up, though, the view justifies every punishing step. On a clear day you can see right across the Highlands, with Ben Nevis visible to the north and the glens spreading out below. The ridge walk across to the subsidiary peaks is exposed in places but genuinely exhilarating - this isn't a gentle family stroll, but experienced hill walkers will find it rewarding.

Really, this is for serious walkers only. It's free to climb - no gates, no fees - but you'll need the right gear, reasonable fitness, and respect for mountain weather. Allow a full day and start early. The nearest town of Ballachulish is only a short drive away, making it easy to base yourself at one of the campsites in the area. Red Squirrel Campsite is particularly well-positioned if you're planning to tackle this and explore the surrounding Glen Coe walks. Winter climbing here requires mountaineering experience; summer and autumn are more forgiving. Not for the casual visitor, but genuinely one of the finest hill walks in Scotland.
