Bessyboot

The walk up Bessyboot from Keswick is proper rewarding, though it won't take you long - maybe 90 minutes if you're not rushing. It's a modest fell by Lake District standards, but that's partly the appeal. You get genuine Lakeland views without the crowds you'd find on Catbells or Skiddaw.

From the top you're looking out across Derwent Water with Borrowdale spreading out behind it. The whole walk is straightforward, nothing technical, which means families with older kids manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a slog, but they'd cope better here than on the steeper neighbours.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit - it's just you, some cairns, and the view. That's rather the point. Allow an easy afternoon, bring water, and don't expect anywhere fancy to stop for a pint at the top.

It bridges the gap between a casual stroll and a serious fell walk.
