Berkhamsted Common

Berkhamsted Common sprawls across 160 acres of proper Chilterns countryside just beyond the town itself. It's open grassland mixed with woodland and ponds - the sort of place locals walk their dogs on weekends, and for good reason. You get decent views across the Bulbourne Valley when the light's right, and there's enough space that even on a busy day it doesn't feel rammed.

The common is genuinely free to access and works brilliantly as a break from park life if you're based at one of the nearby campsites like Norcott or Highridge Farm. A solid two-hour walk covers most of it without feeling rushed, though you could easily spend longer if you're the type to sit by one of the ponds with binoculars. Families with kids aged eight and up will get on with it fine - there's room to run about, and the terrain is mostly manageable. Younger children might lose interest after an hour unless they're keen on spotting ducks.

The walking trails are reasonably well-marked, though a map helps. Go on a dry day if you can - it gets boggy in places after rain. Spring is excellent for wildflowers and bird activity. Avoid peak summer weekends if you value peace and quiet.

It's worth the detour if you're after a proper bit of countryside without needing to trek far from Berkhamsted town. Don't expect dramatic scenery or dramatic views - this is understated Chilterns walking at its best. Combine it with a walk through Berkhamsted itself and you've got a solid morning sorted.
