Bents Park

The salt marshes at Bents Park stretch out flat and endless, and that's exactly why they matter. This nature reserve sits just outside Whitley Bay on Tyne and Wear's coast, and it's a proper working landscape - the kind of place where you'll see wading birds doing what they do best rather than posing for Instagram.

It's a walker's spot, no question. The paths wind through reed beds and across open marsh, and depending on the tide, you can see curlews, redshanks, and on a good day, the occasional heron. The habitat feels raw and unmanicured compared to most nature reserves you'll come across. There's something honest about it.

Families with patient kids will find it worthwhile - but only if you're happy to simply walk and look. Don't expect facilities, playgrounds, or anything that screams "attraction". Binoculars are almost essential. Spring and autumn migration periods are when it really comes alive, though winter brings its own appeal if you like muted light and solitude.

If you're staying at Parkdean Resorts Whitley Bay Holiday Park just down the road, this is an easy morning out and gets you away from the caravan park without much fuss. Old Hartley Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is slightly further at 5.6 miles, but still manageable for a day visit. Access appears to be free, and there's no formal time limit - come dawn, stay till dusk, it's your call. Just respect the wildlife and bring proper footwear for soft ground.
