Benn Coppice

Benn Coppice is a proper working woodland just outside Shrewsbury, the kind of place locals know about but visitors often miss entirely. It's a managed forest where you can actually see coppicing in action - the traditional practice of cutting trees back hard to encourage fresh growth. The paths wind through a mix of mature woodland and newer growth, so it feels like you're walking through different stages of the forest's life cycle.

You won't find facilities or visitor centres here. It's just trees, paths, and the odd bench. Free to access, as far as I can tell, which is refreshing. Allow an hour or two depending on how deep you want to go into the woodland - there's enough to keep you moving without being a massive commitment. It's best in spring when the undergrowth comes alive, or autumn when the light filters through differently.

This works well if you're based at Love2Stay or one of the other caravan sites within a few miles of Shrewsbury. It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly what you want after spending time in the town centre. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might flag without a clear 'destination' within the woodland. Walkers and anyone interested in how our countryside is actually managed will find it genuinely interesting. It's understated, unpretentious, and occasionally muddy - which is precisely the point.
