Ben Shee

Ben Shee isn't the most famous peak in Perthshire, but that's precisely why it's worth the trip. This modest hill near Auchterarder delivers proper views across the Ochil range without the crowds you'd find on Ben Ledi or similar tourist hotspots. The walk itself takes a couple of hours up and back, and you'll spend most of it thinking about how few other people bothered to show up.

What makes it work is the approach - straightforward enough that families with decent boots can manage it, but steep enough to feel like an actual achievement. On a clear day, you get the full sweep of Perthshire's higher ground, and you can see why people bothered climbing these hills for centuries. The summit itself is modest, nothing dramatically rocky or dramatic, but that's part of its appeal.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Alexander House is closest at under four miles away, or Greenhill Farm Glamping if you want something with a touch more character - Ben Shee slots nicely into a Perthshire hiking circuit. Pair it with a walk round Gleneagles or a proper day on the Ochils if you're feeling ambitious. Weather permitting, early morning is your friend here; you'll have the ridge mostly to yourself and the light will be kind on the way down.

It's not a "must do" in the way Ben Vorlich is, but if you're already in the area and the forecast looks decent, there are worse ways to spend three hours.
