Thorny Hill

The walk up Thorny Hill from Auchterarder isn't long, but it punches well above its weight for views across Perthshire. You're looking at maybe forty minutes to the top if you're moving steadily, longer if you stop to catch your breath - and you will, because even modest hills feel steeper than they look on the map.

What makes it worth the effort is the sweeping perspective you get over the Ochil Hills to the north and down towards the Forth valley. On a clear day you can see for miles. The summit itself is bare and windswept, which sounds grim but actually means unobstructed sightlines - no trees blocking the view, which is rarer than you'd think around here.

This works brilliantly for walkers wanting something achievable without a full day's commitment, and families with older kids will manage it without complaint. Younger children might find the exposed bit at the top a bit bleak though, so come prepared for weather. There's nothing technical about the route - it's straightforward uphill walking with decent ground underfoot most of the way.

If you're staying at Broadslap Farm or Alexander House (both within spitting distance), this is an obvious half-morning jaunt before breakfast or lunch. Greenhill Farm Glamping a few miles further out also makes a sensible base for exploring the wider area. Just go early if you want to avoid the afternoon wind that often rolls across here. No facilities up top, so bring water.
