Ben Cruachan

The mountain looms sudden and proper from the A85 near Taynuilt - Ben Cruachan at 1,126 metres isn't Scotland's highest, but it commands the landscape around Loch Awe with an intensity that makes you want to climb it.

The main path starts at the Cruachan Power Station visitor centre and winds up through moorland and rough grass for a steep couple of hours to the summit. It's a proper hill walk, not a stroll, and the path gets rocky and exposed near the top. The views are the thing though - Loch Awe spreads out below like something from a postcard, and on a clear day you can see right across to Ben Nevis.

Walkers will love this. It's the kind of ascent that feels achievable for anyone with decent fitness and proper boots, not a scramble that requires specialist kit. You're looking at four to five hours up and down depending on pace. Kids aged ten and up who've done a few hills before will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the steepness and loose stone near the summit.

The visitor centre itself is worth a look if you've got an hour to spare - it explains the hydro power scheme and has a café. Free to wander about, though facilities are basic.

If you're staying at Loch Awe Holiday Park just down the road, Ben Cruachan makes a proper day out. Pick a clear morning, go early to avoid the afternoon crowds, and bring waterproofs. Scottish weather can turn fast.
