Standing at 522 metres, this Mourne Mountain offers one of the finest views across the Silent Valley reservoir and the surrounding peaks. The climb from the Silent Valley car park takes about two hours - it's a proper workout with some scrambling near the top, but nothing too technical for reasonably fit walkers.

What makes Ben Crom special is the view back down to the reservoir, which looks like something from the Scottish Highlands on a good day. On clear mornings, you can see across to the Irish Sea and even spot the Isle of Man on the horizon. The path isn't waymarked, so bring a map or GPS - it's easy to wander off route in poor visibility.

Families with teenagers who enjoy a challenge will love this, though it's too demanding for little ones. Serious hikers often use it as a warm-up for Slieve Donard or link it with neighbouring peaks for a longer day out. The weather changes fast up here, so pack waterproofs even if Newcastle looks sunny.

It pairs brilliantly with a stay at one of the nearby parks like Tollymore Campsite or Bloody Bridge Campsite, both perfectly placed for exploring the Mournes. Allow a full morning or afternoon, and start early in summer to beat the crowds at the Silent Valley car park.
