Belsay Hall

The moment you walk through the gates at Belsay, you're confronted with three entirely different eras of architecture standing side by side. There's the Victorian Gothic revival mansion itself, all red sandstone and theatrical grandeur, then the austere Grecian hall built in the 1810s that the family preferred to live in, and underneath it all, the fragmentary remains of a 14th-century pele tower - the original fortress that started it all.

It's genuinely odd in the best way. You can wander through empty rooms in both houses, climb the narrow stairs, and get a real sense of how tastes shifted and families changed their minds about what constituted the good life. The kitchens and servants' quarters give proper insight into the mechanics of running a place this size.

The grounds are the real draw though. There's a ravine garden with yews so old they look prehistoric, rocky outcrops, and a network of paths that'll take you a good couple of hours to properly explore if you're thorough. Families with restless kids will find enough to keep them occupied, though it's not theme park stuff - it requires the sort of patience that comes from enjoying a proper wander.

It's run by English Heritage, so expect to pay admission. Newcastle's less than half an hour away, and Northumberland Nook holiday park sits just a few miles south, making this easy to fit into a broader Northumberland trip. Go on a weekday if you can - weekends bring the crowds.
