Bellochantuy, dun site

The ruined dun sits on a low hill just outside Tarbert, commanding views across the Kintyre peninsula with the kind of quiet authority only ancient fortifications seem to manage. What you're looking at are the remains of an Iron Age stronghold - a circular stone-built fort that would have been properly impressive when its walls were intact. These days it's mostly tumbled rubble and grassy mounds, but the site plan is clear enough if you know what you're looking for.

It's a brief visit rather than a destination in itself - twenty minutes of poking about, maybe thirty if you're the sort who likes to photograph every angle and contemplate what life looked like two thousand years back. The walk up is gentle, nothing demanding, and the views across the water alone justify the detour if you're staying nearby. History types and archaeology students will find it worthwhile; small children might get bored quickly once they've clambered on the stones.

Free to visit, open whenever - there's no gate or keeper. Early morning is pleasant if you're camping at Killegruer Caravan Site just down the road, though Muasdale Holiday Park over towards Campbeltown is close enough too if that suits your plans better. The site works well as a short walk between other Kintyre exploration - Tarbert itself is compact and worth a wander for lunch, and you're well-positioned for the coastal paths that make this part of Argyll proper rewarding.
