Bell Mere Pool

Water birds at dawn are the main event here, and if you're serious about that sort of thing, Bell Mere Pool delivers. It's a proper nature reserve just outside Boston - basically a shallow lake fringed with reeds where waders and wildfowl show up reliably, especially in winter when the place gets busy with visiting species. You walk around the perimeter on a footpath, binoculars in hand, hoping for something good in the scope. The habitat is deliberately managed for wildlife, so it's not just a random bit of water - the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust know what they're doing.

Birders and keen naturalists will absolutely get the most from Bell Mere. It's not a destination for casual wanderers after a nice stroll, to be honest. Children might find it dull unless they're into spotting things, and even then you need patience. An hour is usually enough unless migration season has brought in something rare. The pool is free to visit and there's no formal opening hours that I'm aware of - it's the sort of place you rock up to at your convenience.

If you're based at Orchard Holiday Park or Appletree Holiday Park, both within five miles, Bell Mere makes a focused morning or evening outing. It works best combined with a broader exploration of the Fens - there's proper walking country around Boston if you fancy something more substantial. Go early when light's decent and things are still moving. Don't expect manicured facilities or refreshments.
