Bell Mere Conservation Area

The wetland at Bell Mere, just outside Boston, is one of those places that makes you realise how much wildlife you've been walking past without noticing. It's a proper working conservation area - nothing manicured or over-explained - where you might spot water voles, marsh harriers, and the occasional bittern if you're lucky and patient. The main walk takes about an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to stop and stare at every reed warbler. You're following the water's edge mostly, with the landscape opening up to wide fens and drainage channels that feel oddly dramatic for Lincolnshire. Best visited in spring when the birds are noisy and active, or early autumn when the water attracts migrating species. It's the sort of place where families with binoculars will have a proper afternoon, though younger kids who need constant stimulation might find it a bit slow. Don't expect facilities or visitor centres - bring your own refreshments. Free to access, and that's one of the few good surprises left. If you're staying at Appletree Holiday Park nearby, it's easily combined with other walks in the area without disrupting your whole day. The light here is often exceptional, particularly late afternoon when the sun hits the water at that particular angle. Waterproofs essential - it's boggy underfoot most of the year.
