Beinn Uraraidh

This isn't a casual stroll - Beinn Uraraidh is a proper climb that rewards you with views across Islay and out towards the Paps of Jura. The peak sits at 305 metres, which sounds modest until you're halfway up wondering why you didn't check the gradient beforehand.

The walk itself takes you through moorland with the kind of rough, tussocky terrain that catches your boot if you're not paying attention. Weather changes fast up here. I've seen clear blue skies turn grey in ten minutes flat, so bring a waterproof even if the forecast looks decent. The final push to the summit is steeper than you'd expect, but the payoff is genuine - on a clear day the vista stretches proper far.

This is walker territory, not a family afternoon out. Budget two to three hours return depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top. There's no official path in the strict sense, so navigation skills or a good map app are essential. Start from near Port Ellen on the southern coast and work your way up.

The island's got plenty of whisky distillery visits and coastal walks if you need other options, but this peak is the one that gives you proper perspective on how Islay sits in the wider landscape. Free, obviously - it's a mountain. Just respect the terrain and the weather.
