Beinn nan Eun

The walk up Beinn nan Eun from Crieff isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel like you've actually climbed something. The peak sits at 600-odd metres and delivers proper views across Perthshire - on a clear day you can see Strathearn stretching out below, and the distant ridges of the Highlands. It's the sort of walk that takes an hour or so to the summit if you're moderately fit, making it ideal for families who want to bag a peak without committing half the day. The climb itself is relentless, mind. No mucking about on gentle paths here. You'll be breathing hard on the steeper sections, particularly in the latter stages.

The real draw is the accessibility. Crieff is just a short drive away, and from the car park the route is straightforward - no scrambling, no navigation puzzles. Summer's the obvious season, but frankly it's lovely in autumn when the bracken turns gold and the midges have buggered off. Winter's a different beast entirely; the path gets boggy and slippery.

If you're camping at Twenty Shilling Wood or Keltie Bridge just down the road, this makes a cracking half-day outing. Hardened hillwalkers might find it a bit modest as a standalone day, but paired with other walks in the area - or as a warm-up for bigger peaks - it absolutely earns its place. The views are genuinely worth the effort. Bring proper boots. The descent's steep enough to wreck your knees on loose ground.
