Beinn nan Caorach

The walk up Beinn nan Caorach from Kyle is one of those Scottish hill outings that rewards you without demanding a full day's commitment. It's a proper mountain rather than a gentle stroll - 896 metres of the stuff - but the ascent is straightforward enough that you won't need technical gear or a mountain guide.

What makes it worth the effort is the view once you're up there. On a clear day you get the whole sweep of the Southern Highlands laid out below you. Kintail, the Five Sisters ridge, all of it. The summit itself is a bit of a moorland plateau rather than a dramatic peak, but that's fine - it means you can actually stand about and enjoy the vista without clinging to rock.

This is a walker's hill first and foremost. Families with older kids would manage it fine if they're used to mountains; smaller children will find the climb tedious. You'll want a solid three hours up, ninety minutes down, so budget half a day including breaks. The path is well-trodden and obvious most of the way.
