Beinn nam Feannag

The walk up Beinn nam Feannag from Isle of Mull takes you through proper Highland terrain - moorland, scattered rock, and the kind of weather that changes every twenty minutes. At 679 metres, it's not a epic slog, but it's no afternoon stroll either. The summit rewards you with views across the Sound of Mull and, if you time it right, across to Ben More on the island itself.

This is a hill for walkers who like solitude more than company. You won't find waymarked paths or facilities up here - bring good boots, a map, and navigation skills you actually know how to use. The terrain can get boggy lower down, and the exposed ridge demands respect. Allow three to four hours return from the nearest reasonable starting point, depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath.

Families with younger children might find it steep for what it is, though capable hill-walkers aged ten-plus would manage fine in decent conditions. The views are genuine - not dramatic in the Skye sense, but properly wild and worth the effort if you've got the legs and the weather gods on your side. Summer brings longer daylight but also midges, so time it carefully.

Staying at Port nan Gael Campsite down on the coast puts you within easy striking distance. If Beinn nam Feannag doesn't appeal, you're also within reach of Ben More for something more substantial, or numerous shorter island walks if you want less vertical gain.
