Beinn Mholach

The walk up Beinn Mholach rewards you with the kind of view that makes the leg-burn worth it. This modest peak rises above Pitlochry, and from the summit you get proper panoramic stuff - the Tay valley spreads out below, hills roll on for miles, and on a clear day the visibility is excellent. It's not a tough scramble by Scottish standards, which means families with older kids can manage it without too much faffing about.

Allow yourself a good three hours for the round trip from the car park, longer if you're stopping regularly to catch your breath and take photos. The path is well-trodden but can get boggy depending on recent rainfall - waterproof boots aren't optional. Spring through to early autumn is the obvious window, though locals will tell you September gives you the best odds of dry weather.

You'll want to pair this with time in Pitlochry itself. The town's got cafes and shops worth a browse, and if you're basing yourself at Kilvrecht Campsite just down the road, you're in a cracking spot for exploring Perthshire properly. The walk hits different seasons - come spring and the lower slopes have wild flowers, autumn and you're walking through russet tones. Winter's too muddy unless you're genuinely keen.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers after a solid half-day outing and families wanting something achievable without needing climbing experience. Folk after technical challenges will find it straightforward. But if you're after honest Scottish hill air and views without the commitment of Ben Nevis, this delivers.
