Beinn Dubhchraig

The walk up Beinn Dubhchraig isn't what you'd call gentle, but from Crianlarich it's one of the most rewarding grinds in the Southern Highlands. At 840 metres, it's properly steep in places - your legs will know about it - but the payoff is genuine. The summit opens out to views across Glen Dochart and over to Ben Lui, and on a clear day you can see right across to the Trossachs.

This is a walker's mountain, no question. Families with younger kids should probably pass or be very honest about fitness levels. It takes a solid three to four hours return, depending on pace, and the descent is just as tough on the knees as the climb up. Bring proper boots. There's no facility here - it's just the mountain, the path, and you.

What makes it work is how accessible it is from Crianlarich itself. Park near the village and you're away within minutes. The route is straightforward once you know where to start, though a map or phone app is essential - it's not marked out like some of the honeypot peaks. It's free, obviously. The scramble near the top catches most walkers off guard; it's genuine rock, not just steep grass.

If you're staying at Tyndrum Holiday Park down the road, this is ideal for a serious day out. Beinglas Campsite works too if you want something closer. Pair it with Ben Lui for a double-peak day if you're feeling ambitious, or do it alone on a quieter weekend when the place is genuinely peaceful.
