Beckingham Wood

Beckingham Wood is a proper woodland walk just outside Doncaster - nothing fancy, just decent trees and quiet paths if you're after a break from the caravan parks dotted around this corner of Nottinghamshire. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which counts for something when you're based at Waterfront Country Park or Olive Tree just down the road.

The wood itself is straightforward: woodland trails, decent for families who don't need everything spelled out with interpretation boards. Kids will enjoy poking around, climbing fallen logs, spotting birds. It's free to access and you can spend anything from forty minutes to a couple of hours depending on whether you're a proper rambler or just after a leg-stretch. No facilities to speak of, so bring what you need.

Timing-wise, spring's lovely for bluebells and autumn's solid for colour. Summer gets a bit muggy under the canopy; winter's fine if you don't mind mud. It won't set your heart racing - Beckingham Wood is functional rather than spectacular - but that's exactly why it works as a quick jaunt from the holiday parks clustered around Misterton and Hallcroft Fishery. Pair it with a walk around one of the nearby fisheries or a trip into Doncaster town centre and you've got yourself a decent half-day. Not a destination in itself, but a genuine local asset if you're staying put for a week.
