Axholme Line Nature Reserve

The old railway line between Doncaster and the Lincolnshire border has been allowed to go back to nature, and it's genuinely one of the better rail-to-trail conversions in the Midlands. You get a dead-straight, traffic-free path stretching for miles through proper countryside - the kind of walk where you can actually hear yourself think.

It's a linear reserve rather than a contained site, so you pick your entry point and walk as far as your legs allow. The embankments either side have wild flowers in summer, and the path itself is well-maintained underfoot. Birdwatchers tend to find it productive; you'll spot warblers and finches if you go early morning. Families with younger children do fine for a couple of miles, though older kids who actually enjoy walking get the most from pushing further out.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of - this isn't that kind of place. It's free to access, and you can show up whenever you like. Spring and early summer work best when the embankments are in flower and the birds are vocal. Doncaster itself is your nearest town for parking and supplies.

If you're staying at Misterton Holiday Park or Waterfront Country Park nearby, this gives you a proper leg-stretcher without driving anywhere. It won't take a whole day, but as part of a wider park holiday in the area it's worth knowing about. Real walking, minimal crowds.
