Beck Plantation

The woodland around Beck Plantation is proper Yorkshire - flat, quiet, and the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a working forest near York, with good walking trails that wind through mixed woodland without being fussy about it. The paths are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though expect mud after rain. You'll get some nice views across the Wolds if you're here in autumn when the canopy thins out, and in spring the place comes alive with bluebells. There's nothing fancy about it - no visitor centre or cafe - but that's rather the point. Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander, or just thirty minutes if you're after a quick leg-stretch between York and the coast.

This works best for walkers who prefer their nature undressed. History types might find it a bit thin, and young kids could run out of steam after an hour unless you're tackling longer routes. The forest is free to access, which makes it a decent complement to a glamping break at one of the nearby spots like Yapham Holds or Bugthorpe Grange - gives you somewhere to properly stretch the legs without fighting crowds. Winter's quietest if you like solitude, but February can be grim underfoot. Spring and early autumn are the real winners here. Worth the detour from York if you're after actual woods rather than manicured parkland, but it won't be anyone's highlight reel.
