Beaghmore Stone Circle A

The wind cuts across bare moorland as you approach Beaghmore, and suddenly the stones are just there - seven circles arranged across a treeless expanse near Cookstown, some complete, others reduced to low markers poking through heather. It's Bronze Age stuff, thousands of years old, and the sheer scale of what you're standing in hits harder than any museum display ever could.

What makes this place exceptional is how untamed it feels. There are no barriers, no visitor centre, no gift shop - just you, the stones, and the Sperrin hills rolling away to the horizon. You can walk between the circles, touch them, spend as long as you want contemplating what rituals took place here. The layout alone suggests serious astronomical and ceremonial purpose, though honest truth is archaeologists still debate exactly what went on.

Historyaphiles will be in their element. Families with older kids who can manage a moorland walk will find it genuinely atmospheric rather than boring. Younger children might struggle with the lack of visible action. Allow an hour minimum to do it justice - longer if you're the contemplative type.

It's completely free and accessible year-round, though winter winds across that exposed ground are genuinely brutal. Summer or early autumn work better.
