Beacon Castle (Settlement)

The Iron Age fort sits on a headland just outside Ilfracombe, commanding views across the Bristol Channel that haven't changed much in two thousand years. What you're looking at is the earthwork remains of a settlement - ditches and ramparts that once enclosed a proper defensive position, though these days it's just grass and the occasional sheep.

It's not a dramatic ruin. There's no stonework to photograph, no gift shop, no interpretation boards telling you what to think. What you get instead is the chance to stand where ancient people stood and work out why they chose this spot. The views alone explain it - you can see for miles, and anyone approaching by sea would have been spotted long before arrival.

Walkers will find it worth the detour from Ilfracombe, particularly if you're already exploring the north Devon coast. It's the kind of place that takes forty minutes to an hour, including time to properly look around and contemplate the view. Families with older kids interested in history might engage with it; younger children will probably get bored quickly unless you're prepared to tell them proper stories about Iron Age warriors.

Since there's no formal visitor facility, admission is free and there are no opening hours to worry about. The surrounding area is well served by holiday parks - Longlands is closest at just 3.2 miles, with Newberry Valley and Sandaway Beach both within six miles if you're planning a week in the region. Combine it with the coastal walks around Ilfracombe itself for a decent day out.
