Beachfield Gardens

The walk into Beachfield Gardens takes you through proper coastal scrub before the place opens up into something unexpected - a sheltered pocket of rare plants that thrive nowhere else along this stretch of Cornish coast. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured affair, so you won't find neat flowerbeds or café tables. What you get instead is genuine habitat: wind-sculpted shrubs, specialist wildflowers depending on season, and the kind of quiet you don't find five minutes from Newquay's town centre.

This works best for naturalists, keen botanists, and anyone after a gentle 45-minute ramble without climbing. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, which means it's usually peaceful. Families with young kids might tire quickly as there's nothing to do once you've had a wander - no playground equipment, no interpretation boards to speak of.

You're essentially a stone's throw from Sunhaven Holiday Park, less than half a mile away, making this dead handy if you're based there. Even the parks further out towards Crantock Beach or Hendra are only a ten-minute drive, so it slots perfectly as a morning activity before heading to the beach proper.

Admission appears to be free, and there's no set visiting hours that I'm aware of - it's just there to access. Go early if you want solitude; late afternoon when the light turns golden works brilliantly for photography. The reserve's real value shows itself if you care about what's growing underfoot rather than just ticking a box.
