Battleton Brook Open Space

The brook itself is the draw here - a proper little waterway cutting through open grassland just outside Evesham, where you can actually watch the water do something rather than stare at a static pond. Battleton Brook Open Space is one of those places locals know but tourists often walk past, and that's partly because there's no grand entrance or visitor centre to announce itself.

It's a working nature reserve, which means the habitat comes first and the facilities second. You'll find yourself on informal paths alongside the brook, spotting kingfishers if you're lucky, and the whole thing feels pleasantly ungoverned - there's no tannoy, no gift shop, no staged photo opportunities. The grassland around the water supports wildflowers in spring and summer, and the whole space attracts walkers and bird-watchers who actually care about what they're looking at rather than just ticking off a visit.

This works best for families with kids old enough to manage muddy banks without complaint, or for anyone doing a proper walking day in the Vale of Evesham. It's free to access and takes as long as you fancy - twenty minutes if you're just passing through, an hour if you're serious about watching the wildlife. Best visited early morning or dusk when the birds are most active.
