Battle of Prestonpans, 1745

The field south of Prestonpans is quietly ordinary until you know what happened there on a September morning in 1745. This is where Bonnie Prince Charlie's Highland army routed a British regiment in just fifteen minutes - a victory that shocked London and changed the course of the Jacobite Rising. There's no theme park theatrics here, just open farmland where you can walk the battlefield and read the markers dotted across the ground telling you where regiments stood and fell.

Bring a decent book or download the battlefield trail information first - interpretation on site is minimal, which means you're left with your own imagination and the landscape itself.
