Bateinghope Burn

Water lies perfectly still in the valley, reflecting moorland sky like polished glass. Bateinghope Burn is one of those quiet Northumberland spots that barely registers on most people's radar - which is precisely why it's worth the drive from Otterburn.

It's a small upland lake rather than the sort of sprawling reservoir you'd spot from miles away. The setting matters more than the size here. You get proper heather moorland rolling away from the water's edge, the landscape opening out the way it does across this part of the Pennines. The walking is straightforward, nothing too demanding, and the burn itself is pleasant for a wander if you're after something low-key.

This isn't a destination in itself - not unless you're specifically into upland water scenery or photography. But if you're based at Border Forest Holiday Park, it makes a cracking half-day outing. Combine it with exploring the wider moor or use it as a quiet spot to sit with a flask before heading elsewhere. The closest facilities and services are back in Otterburn, a few miles south, so don't expect cafés or facilities on site.

Go when the weather's settled. The moorland can be bleak in rain, and the lack of shelter means you'll feel every gust. Spring and early autumn offer the best light and most comfortable walking conditions. It's worth an hour or two if you're in the area, but don't rearrange your itinerary to get here specifically.
