Batchelors Farm Nature Reserve

The South Downs around Hassocks hide a proper little sanctuary in Batchelors Farm Nature Reserve, though it's not somewhere you'll stumble upon by accident. A working farm that's opened up sections for wildlife, it gives you a genuine slice of Sussex countryside without the twee gift shop nonsense.

What you're actually doing here is walking through managed meadows and woodland where the focus is on letting nature get on with it. Spring brings wildflowers - violets, celandine, the lot - and the bird life is decent year-round. You won't get dramatic viewpoints or dramatic anything really, but that's rather the appeal. It's the kind of place where you notice things: a buzzard overhead, a wall of bluebells, the way the light filters through the trees.

Walkers get the most from it, honestly. Families with young kids might find an hour enough before restlessness sets in, unless yours are genuinely into spotting wildlife. Birdwatchers should ring ahead - conditions vary through the seasons and access isn't always straightforward.

Stay at Blacklands Farm Caravan & Camping or The Secret Campsite nearby and you've got proper South Downs walking on the doorstep. This reserve works best as part of a broader ramble rather than a destination in itself. Free access, as far as I can gather, though it's worth checking locally as these places sometimes charge for parking or have seasonal restrictions.

Come in late spring when the wildflowers are at their peak. Autumn's decent too.
