Bastion 4, Hilsea Lines

The Hilsea Lines are Portsmouth's Victorian defensive fortifications, and Bastion 4 is one of the best-preserved sections you can actually walk around. Built in the 1860s to protect the city from French invasion, it's essentially a massive earth rampart with brick gun emplacements - proper mid-19th century military engineering. You get genuine views into how soldiers would have lived and worked in these structures, with restored gun positions and clear sightlines across the old defensive perimeter.

It's free to access and takes about 45 minutes to an hour if you're properly exploring the bastion itself. The walk along the ramparts is straightforward, though it can get muddy after rain. History enthusiasts will find plenty to absorb here - the level of preservation tells a real story. Families with younger kids might find 20 minutes about their limit unless they're already interested in Victorian military history.

Timing-wise, go when the light's decent - early morning or late afternoon shows the brick work better. Winter visits are quieter but bleaker. If you're staying at Hayling Island Holiday Park or Mill Rythe Coastal Village, this makes a solid rainy-day detour or a morning's walk before heading to the beach. It's maybe five miles from Hayling Island itself, so easily fitted into a coastal holiday without eating up a full day. The Lines stretch for miles, but Bastion 4 is the most accessible point for actually getting inside the fortifications rather than just walking past them.
