Bassetts' Field

This patch of wetland just outside Downpatrick is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan around, but it rewards a quiet morning. Bassetts' Field is a working nature reserve where the ground stays boggy year-round, attracting waders and waterfowl that you won't spot in the manicured parkland nearby. The walking is straightforward - muddy paths wind through reed beds and across wooden boardwalks where they've bothered to build them. Binoculars are essential; the birds are skittish and you'll want distance anyway.

Birders get the most from this. Families with older kids who can handle a bit of squelch will find it interesting for an hour, but there's no visitor centre, no facilities, and younger children tire quickly when there's nothing to do but look. It's free, which is the main thing in its favour.

What makes it work is the contrast with nearby Delamont Country Park - you could easily combine the two in a day. Delamont is the polished version, all manicured grounds and proper amenities for a half-day outing; Bassetts' is the rough edges, the bit where nature hasn't been tidied up for public consumption. If you're staying at Delamont or Buckshill just down the road, an early visit here before breakfast clears your head. Winter and spring are best - migratory season brings the interesting birds, and the ground's firm enough not to be actively treacherous.
