Base of ancient farm building

The crumbling stone foundations scattered across this Dorset site are all that remain of a farm building that's stood here for centuries. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow walk round - you can actually feel how people once lived here, in this particular patch of ground near Ringwood, long before anything was properly mapped or preserved.

There's not much to see in terms of structure, to be honest. The walls are low, broken, worn down by weather and time. But that's precisely what makes it worth your while. You're looking at genuine medieval or Saxon agriculture - the actual footprint of someone's livelihood. For history buffs and archaeologists, it's compelling. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming after ten minutes unless you're good at storytelling around ruins.

The site is free and accessible whenever you fancy it - no opening hours, no ticket office. You'll want to allow maybe twenty minutes for a proper look, longer if you're taking photographs or sketching. Go in late afternoon light, if you can. The shadows across the stones tell you more than the stones themselves sometimes do.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Oakdene Forest Park or Forest Edge are both within four miles - this makes an easy afternoon detour. It's the sort of historical stop that breaks up a holiday nicely, especially if you're combining it with walks through the wider Dorset countryside. Worth the short drive from Ringwood, though don't expect Instagram moments.
