Bartlemuir Wood

The woodland floor at Bartlemuir is soft underfoot - a proper mix of pine needles, moss, and the sort of damp earth that smells exactly like a Scottish forest should. You're looking at a working wood in Aberdeenshire, inland from the coast and close enough to Tullochvenus that it makes sense as a morning or afternoon stop rather than a full day's commitment.

What you get is straightforward: mixed forest paths, decent enough for families with older kids and absolutely the ticket if you're after a decent walk without the moorland slog. The trees are substantial - mostly conifers - and there's enough space to feel properly woodland rather than crowded. On a decent day it's a cracking spot to stretch your legs for an hour or so. Autumn's particularly good if you time it right, when the light filters through differently and you're not battling clouds at ground level.

It's free to access, and there's no gatekeeping or visitor centre nonsense to faff about with. Just turn up and walk. Give yourself an hour minimum, longer if you're not in a rush. Families with younger children might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes - there's no viewpoint revelation at the end, no waterfall, just trees and more trees.
