Three hundred and twenty-two metres above the Solway coast, this modest summit offers surprisingly expansive views across the Dumfries countryside without requiring a proper hiking expedition. The walk up takes about 45 minutes from Dalbeattie, following well-marked paths through mixed woodland before emerging onto open moorland for the final push.

Families with children over eight will find it manageable - steep enough to feel like an achievement but not so challenging that it becomes a slog. The views from the top stretch south to the Lake District fells and west towards the Isle of Man on clear days. Walkers often combine it with nearby Screel Hill for a longer day out.

Bring a flask and sandwiches; there's a lovely sheltered spot just below the cairn that catches the morning sun. The descent can be slippery after rain, so proper walking boots are essential rather than trainers.

Staying at one of the holiday parks around Dalbeattie makes this an easy morning excursion. Glenearly Caravan Park sits closest at just a mile away, while Kippford View Holiday Park offers sea views to complement your mountain conquest. Most folk are back down by lunchtime, leaving the afternoon free for exploring Dalbeattie's granite architecture or heading to the coast at Kippford.
