Barrow Plantation

The walk through Barrow Plantation, just outside Holmrook, is one of those proper forest strolls that doesn't require a map or a masterplan. Conifer stands rise around you, dense enough to block the worst of the drizzle, and the forest floor is soft with decades of needles underfoot. It's a working woodland, so you won't find it manicured or themed - this is the real thing.

What appeals most here is the simplicity of it. No visitor centre, no signboards explaining which tree is which. You walk because the air is clean and quiet and the light filters through green. Families with younger kids will do fine for an hour or so - there are rougher paths that keep things interesting - though older walkers hunting for proper woodland silence will get the most from it.

The forest sits well within reach of Fisherground Campsite, barely four miles away, making it an easy morning's outing if you're based there. Cumbria's got no shortage of lakes and dramatic fells, so Barrow Plantation works best as a filler day rather than a destination on its own merit. But if you're after a break from the crowds and the postcard views, this quiet stretch of woodland does the job without fuss. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on how meandering you want to be.
