Barmoor Castle Country Park

The ruins at Barmoor Castle sit quietly in open Northumberland countryside, a few miles south of Wooler. What you're actually looking at are the remains of a 14th-century stronghold - crumbling stone walls that tell you straightaway this place has taken a battering from centuries of Scottish raids and English weather. It's not a dramatic ruin like some castles you see; more a case of reading the land and imagining what stood here when it mattered.

The appeal lies in the walking, really. Barmoor works best for people who like their history without the visitor centre faffing about - proper walkers, local history types, anyone wanting to piece together the Borders story for themselves. You can wander the grounds fairly freely, and the views across to the Cheviot Hills are genuinely good. Allow an hour or so if you're keen on photographs and poking about the stonework.

It's free, which helps. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's better and you've got the place to yourself. Midday can feel a bit exposed and ordinary.

Worth combining with a walk along the Wooler Water rather than spending a full afternoon here alone. The castle itself is the pretext, not the main event.
