Viewpoint south of Wooler

The road south from Wooler climbs steeply, and then suddenly you're looking across the entire Cheviot valley in one direction and the Merse rolling away in the other. It's the sort of view that makes you stop the car mid-journey just to stand there for five minutes. The Cheviot itself dominates to the west, and on a clear day you can pick out the watershed ridgeline that marks the Scottish border.

There's no visitor infrastructure here - no cafe, no gift shop, no overcrowding. You pull in, you look, you think about how small you are. Walkers heading up into the Cheviots often pause here before attempting the proper climbs. It's not a destination in itself; it's what you get on the way to somewhere else.

Worth timing your journey for late afternoon when the light comes in from the side. Early morning works too, but you're fighting the sun. Come on a clear day and the view rewards you handsomely. Fog rolls in fast though, so if cloud is low over the hills, save it for another trip.

Staying at Highburn House Caravan Park or Riverside Wooler Holiday Park puts you within spitting distance of this. If you're based around Wooler - and there's plenty to do in the hills roundabout - this is the five-minute diversion that reminds you why you came here. Not unmissable, but absolutely worth knowing about.
