The Barle Valley cuts through Devon's interior like a scar, and it's properly wild. This isn't a manicured attraction with visitor centres or gift shops - it's a genuine river valley that demands you walk it, preferably with boots on and a map that's actually readable. Start near Lynton and you're looking at serious moorland scenery, steep wooded slopes, and a river that sounds genuinely furious after rain.

Most people tackle this on foot, threading along the valley floor or scrambling up to higher paths with views that stretch for miles. The walk takes commitment - it's not a gentle amble, and the terrain changes constantly. Walkers who like their landscapes honest rather than soft will spend a full day here without checking their phone once. Families with younger kids might find an hour or two enough before the legs start complaining.

There's no entrance fee, no opening hours, no facilities to speak of. That's rather the point. Go when the light's good - early autumn is cracking, or after a dry spell in summer when the river's manageable.
