Barlae Hill

Standing at 200 metres above sea level, this modest summit offers surprisingly good views across the Solway coast without the leg-aching effort of the bigger Galloway peaks. The walk up from Castle Douglas takes about an hour each way - steady rather than steep, making it proper family-friendly territory.

From the top, you can see right across to the Lake District fells on a clear day, with the Solway Firth stretching out below. It's not dramatic in the way Ben Nevis is dramatic, but there's something quietly satisfying about earning those views without needing crampons.

Families with older children will find this a good introduction to hill walking, though toddlers might struggle with the distance. Dog walkers love it - plenty of space to let them off the lead once you're clear of the farmland below. The path can get boggy after rain, so decent boots are worth bringing.

Being so close to Castle Douglas makes this an easy addition to a Galloway holiday. Several holiday parks dot the area around Kippford and beyond - Kippford View Holiday Park and Drumroamin Farm are both within a few miles. After a morning on Barlae Hill, the cafes back in Castle Douglas make a proper job of afternoon tea.
