Barewing Hill

The walk up Barewing Hill takes about forty minutes from Castle Douglas, and it's one of those Scottish climbs that rewards you properly without demanding mountaineering skills. The summit sits at just over 700 feet, which means the views across Dumfries and Galloway unfold without the altitude sickness. On a clear day you're looking at the Solway Firth to the south and the rolling farmland spreading out in every direction - the kind of landscape that explains why people stay put here.

It's a straightforward ascent with a decent path most of the way, though the final stretch gets a bit boggy depending on the weather. The exposed position means wind can kick up quickly, even when the valley below looks calm. Best visited in late morning when the light's decent but before the afternoon cloud rolls in from the west.
