Bare Head

The walk up to Bare Head from Bradford takes you through proper moorland, the kind that feels properly wild despite being close to the city. It's not a brutal scramble - more of a steady trek across open ground where you'll spot the occasional walker and plenty of grouse if you're lucky. The summit itself is modest, no dramatic rocky pinnacle, but the views across West Yorkshire are genuinely worth the effort. Families with older kids will manage fine if they're used to walking, but it's not the sort of place where you can carry a toddler and expect to enjoy yourself. The moorland can be boggy in winter and after rain - proper boots aren't optional, they're essential.

If you're camping at Elland Hall Farm or Upwood, both within five miles, Bare Head makes a decent morning outing before lunch. It's the kind of walk that clears your head without exhausting you, leaving the afternoon free for exploring Hebden Bridge's cafes and shops. That said, the peak itself won't hold your interest for more than ten minutes once you've taken the photos.
